REVIEW – Mean Girls Returns to Cinemas as a Musical!

Mean Girls. One of the most iconic films in cinema history. So iconic in fact, that they have since turned it into a theatre show! Now, they have adapted the musical into ANOTHER film that can now be viewed in cinemas!

The original Mean Girls film was released all the way back in 2004. It starred some of the most notable actors in our time including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried. In the new remake, we see a cast of new characters. Upon watching, it does take a while into watching the film to get used to new faces quoting some of the most famous lines ever. Once you look past that, you can enjoy it at it’s full potential.

The story follows Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) who transfers to an American school after being home-schooled in Africa. As it is her first time attending a high school, she quickly learns that the halls can be just as viscous as the wildlife she saw back in Africa. She meets Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey) who help her settle in by showing her the “cliques” of the school. They warn her of one group in particular – The Plastics. The Plastics are the most popular girls in school that consists of Karen (Avantika Vandanapu), Gretchen (Bebe Wood), and, of course, the legend that is Regina George (Reneé Rapp). After being introduced to The Plastics, Cady and her new friends agree that she will hang out with them so they can laugh at what they say. This turns into a plan of revenge after Regina kisses her ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), who Regina knows Cady has a massive crush on.

The story has been modernised to suit todays times. The music is what makes the film most different to the original. It is an interesting viewing experience, and you will leave the cinema with all these songs stuck in your head. The vocals from the cast was phenomenal, making the characters their own as best as they could. We also saw some familiar faces as Tina Fey and Tim Meadows return to play their roles as Ms Norbury and Principal Duval.

Overall, it was a great film. Nothing can beat the original, but the new cast certainly tried their hardest. And it did work. It was funny, entertaining, and has a spectacular soundtrack. Recommend to all Mean Girls fans and beyond. Our only request is that if you go to watch it on a Wednesday, make sure you wear pink!
