From November onwards, many of us like to get into the Christmas spirit early by listening to our favourite Christmas songs.

To celebrate the lead up to the festivities, we are counting down the days with our Top 5 series, discussing our favourite tracks that made the top spot for each decade. Welcome to the 70’s!

5) Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) – Pink Floyd

Our first song of this decade and coming in at number 5 is this absolute classic from Pink Floyd. Give their listeners the confidence to stick up for themselves inspired many, and made this song Christmas number 1 in 1979.

4) Lonely This Christmas – Mud

‘Lonely This Christmas’ is one of many slower and more emotional songs in this series. Mud explain how it feels to have lost a loved one in the winter time, and how difficult Christmas can be without their presence. It’s also a gentle reminder that not everyone has a family to spend time with over the festive season. It will get you in your feels, for sure!

3) Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

In some of the best story telling of all time, Queen became Christmas number 1 with this fantastic song. With a range of speed and interludes, this firm fan favourite shows the best skills of the band in their prime. Although not festive, listeners will grab their air guitar in an instance all year round!

2) Mary’s Boy Child – Boney M

Another Christmas classic from the 70s, topping the charts in 1978. One of the more religious tracks, it remains popular to this day and is still played at many a Christmas party around the world.

1) Merry Xmas Everybody – Slade

Topping our first top 5 and wrapping up the 70s is possibly one of the most popular Christmas song at all times. No matter your age, it’s likely you’d have grown up listening to this one. Due to its popularity, it’s a popular track to be covered including renditions from Steps, Oasis, and Girls Aloud.
