MUSIC REWIND: McFly – ‘Room On The 3rd Floor’ vs. ‘Young Dumb Thrills’

We are huge McFly fans here at About The Noise. Our name was actually inspired by their album ‘Above The Noise’. As we continue our music rewind features, it seemed only right we celebrate Tom, Dougie, Danny and Harry by taking a look over their first and last album releases.

McFly released their first studio album ‘Room On The Third Floor’ back in July 2004. At the time, a lot of us were already obsessed with Busted, and naturally the fans had a clear favourite of which band they preferred. Here’s a few of our favourites from the album:

‘Hypnotised’ really showcases the younger voices of Danny and Tom, and their sound has matured over the years. This song displays the perfect harmonies of the band, with an upbeat spin on a devastating loss.

‘She Left Me’ is another fan favourite. With a 60s-esque sound, this tune will make you sway from side to side while you sing along. Again, the perfectly timed harmonies work perfectly together, bringing us the classic, old school sound we grew to love from McFly.

‘Surfer Babe’ will give you beach boys vibes, a sound we know that McFly have continued to be inspired by. After a few songs with deep meaning and emotionally crafted lyrics, ‘Surfer Babe’ is the feel good sound you’ll need to hear towards the end of the album.

After a hiatus, fans were treated in November to McFly’s new album ‘Young Dumb Thrills’. Here’s a few of the stand out songs:

‘Another Song About Love’ details how boring life can be as you grow older. When you’re a songwriter, it can be difficult to constantly think of new and inspiring material. So if in doubt, just write ‘Another Song About Love’

‘Tonight Is The Night’ is all about the strength in vulnerability. The stigma around mental health, specifically with men, is more and more apparent these days. ‘Tonight Is The Night’ is the moment of realisation, when you know you need to seek help for how you’re feeling.

‘Mad About You’ gives us old school McFly vibes mixed with their new era sound. This chilled out tune will have you singing along from start to finish. The lyrics are about being in a relationship with someone who can’t seem to let things go and appears to hold a grudge. There’s a long list of things that can make them mad, but these things will make you mad about them all the same.

The band will be going on their “Young Dumb Thrills” tour next year! But they have also recently announced that they will be doing another, one off show at London’s O2 Arena on the 21st of November 2021! Tickets will be on sale this Friday (18th December) at AXS.
