Your second instalment is here as we countdown to Christmas, and today’s decade see’s us taking a dive into the 80’s!
5) Don’t You Want Me – Human League
The opening line of ‘you were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar’ is one of the most famous introductions in music. This upbeat song played at many parties to this day, was Christmas number 1 in 1981. ‘Don’t You Want Me’ continues to be one of Human League’s most famous songs, and although not Christmas in nature, is often referred to as one of the best songs of the 80’s.
4) Always On My Mind – Pet Shop Boys
In the height of their fame, Pet Shop Boys covered the Elvis classic and topped the charts during festivities. Putting their own signature sound on the classic had listeners swooning, and brought a more upbeat vibe to the previous more emotional sound. Not many tracks performed by the king himself can be covered well, however, Pet Shop Boys fought against the odds with this one.
3) Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ Stevens
Another classic Christmas song that is still played all over the world today. It’s fun, it’s upbeat and doesn’t have any hidden messages or meanings. It’s just what you want to hear in Christmas Day, and will have you grinning from ear to ear. Filled with pure joy, wholesome lyrics and the catchiest chorus on this list, it remains a classic to listen to in the lead up to the big day.
2) Only You – Flying Pickets
Flying Pickets topped the charts in 1983 with ‘Only You’ and it has remained a really popular song to cover by many different artists. Flying Pickets’ harmonies throughout are second to none, and is an absolute delight to listen to. This is the only acapella track to top the charts at Christmas!
1) Do They Know it’s Christmas? – Band Aid
1984 saw musicians of all walks of life hit the recording studio and raise money for charity. There has been a further 3 versions since this and there’s likely to be more. Understanding that not everyone is as fortunate as each other, it really makes you think about the meaning of Christmas and the decisions you make.
