Our Top 5 Favourite Disney Pixar Short Films

On January 25th 2006, Disney agreed to buy Pixar for approximately $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal. Both Disney and Pixar define a lot of our childhoods – and even our adulthoods. The lessons that we were taught when watching these films were lessons that we took with us as we grew older, and Disney will continue to do this for every other generation for years to come.

So, we all have our favourite Disney and Pixar films. But who can forget the wonders that are the Pixar shorts you get before watching EVERY Pixar film? This is a tradition that Pixar Animation have carried out for decades! We thought we’d go through the years and give you our Top 5 Favourite Disney Pixar Short Films. All films mentioned can be found on Disney+ for your viewing!

5) Knick Knack (1989)

Disney Pixar Animation – Knick Knack 1989

“Knick Knack” was one of the first Pixar shorts that was ever created. Pixar Animations made this short in 1989 – six whole years before their first film Toy Story in 1995! The film tells a story of a snowglobe snowman trying to escape his glass dome prison to join the other travel souvenirs who are having a hot party. Does he succeed?…well…you’ll just have to watch it and find out.

4) For The Birds (2001)

Disney Pixar Animation – For The Birds 2001

This Pixar short is something that we’re sure is embedded deep into all our brains. “For The Birds” is an animation that we all knew as a child – whether we wanted to remember it or not. It’s a comical tale about a flock of birds perched on a telephone wire. Things get pretty close and tense…until a big dopey bird comes along and makes matters worse with some hilarious results.

3) Bao (2018)

Disney Pixar Animation – Bao 2018

Whilst the last two have tickled your funny bone, “Bao” will have you reaching for the tissues. Being one of the most recent animations Pixar have released, “Bao” is a story that touched our hearts. At first, you’re not entirely sure where the tale is going. It shows a women growing emotionally attached to a dumpling that comes to life…are you with us? We see them spend time together and their relationship grow. The women gets increasingly more protective over her precious dumpling. Whilst the story sounds bizzarre, the plot twist at the end puts all the confusing pieces together. It’s a tale about a mothers love and how sometimes we can take that for granted. A beautiul story filled with messages for the old and young.

2) Lava (2015)

Disney Pixar Animation – Lava 2015

When we first watched “Lava” back in 2015…it kind of scared us. Whilst the animation is absolutely stunning, there’s no denying that the look on that volcanoes face is kind of creepy. But, it’s a short that we grew to love – mainly because of the song that’s sung throughout it. The story was inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the allure of ocean volcanoes. “Lava” is a musical love story between two volcanoes that takes place over millions of years. The song does get stuck in your head for weeks though…just a caution.

1) Piper (2016)

Disney Pixar Animation – Piper 2016

Some of the most beautiful art that has ever been created are the most simplistic. The story of the adorable sandpiper hatchling is one of those masterpieces. It shows the baby bird venturing out from her nest for the first time to dig for food on the shoreline. However, the food is buried in the sand where the terrifying waves roll up. The detail that Pixar animators have put into this film is truly phenomenal. You will appreciate every grain of sand, every feather, and every drop of water that you will come across whilst watching. Simply stunning.
