Six The Musical is a fantastic show that is beloved in the West End AND Broadway. It is now currently touring the UK and we had the pleasure of seeing it in Swindon!
For those who are unaware, Six is a musical that is based around the story of Henry the eighth and his six wives. The show takes on a much more modern take on history making it fun for all ages. The concept is quite different from other musicals you may have seen. You are greeted by the six wives who look stunning in their sparkly costumes and incredible boots. Addressing the audience, the characters explain that they will each tell their own story of how tragic their life was with their husband by singing about their experience. In return, the audience gets to decide who will be the lead singer of their band.
The set-up is portrayed as a concert, but there is still a story behind it. Between each song, there is hilarious banter between the characters on stage. Not only are is the music some of the best you have heard in musicals before, but the comedy factor is certainly present as well. Not only that, but it is also weirdly educational. Not in the way your school history lessons used to be, but in a fun way that makes you actually retain the information. We left the theatre knowing that we learnt an awful lot more about this period of time than we ever did before. This is because the writers of the musical had modernised it, making our history understandable and relatable to today’s audience.
