We all know of the tragic, real-life tale of jazz singer Amy Winehouse. Now, a new biographical drama has just dropped in cinemas.

“Back To Black” was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. It showcases the troubled life of Amy (Marisa Abela) as she rises to stardom. She was once a young girl with a dream, but as we know, that dream came at a cost. Her troubles started after she met the love of her life; Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O’Connell). The pair fell head over heels in love with each other but, they were destined to fail from the start. Despite fate not being on their side, the film showcased their romance as a real, true love that Amy was happy in.

Although “Back To Black” showed the falls of the singer, their were many aspects that portrayed a young girl who loved her husband, family, and music. Her addiction didn’t define her. The most precious, and most heartwarming moments within the film were scenes she shared with her Nan; Cynthia Winehouse (Lesley Manville). The two were best friends and it was lovely to watch that relationship on the big screen.

The cast and crew did a fantastic job of telling Amy’s story. From the very beginnings, to the inevitable end. Marisa Abela was incredible at acting the singers quirks and mannerisms. Although she didn’t look like her that much, she certainly portrayed the way the songstress acted and behaved. It was easy to convince yourself that Amy Winehouse was right in front of you.

Amy passed away in 2011 of alcohol poisoning after a long period of sobriety. She was only 27 when she passed. To watch her story be brought to life the way it has was an absolute pleasure to watch. It was a sad tale, but an iconic one that we won’t forget. Be sure to check out at your local cinema now!
