Today (24th February 2023), Irish sibling duo Paper Tides release their stunning debut single titled “Home.”
“Home” is a beautiful blend of dreamy lyricism and enchanting vocals. The two voices are simply made for each other. The track allows the listener to escape among the harmonies and forget about the troubles they may have had that day – even if it is only for a few moments of serenity.
Paper Tides are an indie band that consists of Odhran Murphy and Sionan Hanratty – singer/songwriters and multi-instrumentalists who clearly have a natural talent for music flowing through their veins. “Home” is set to be their first ever single to be released, and we wanted to know more about their journey so far, and what it’s like to be an independent artist.
Why don’t you start by introducing yourself? What’s the story behind Paper Tides?
Hey we are Paper Tides and we are an indie Folk brother and sister Duo! Some people may recognise previously as solo artists, Odhran Murphy & RUE. However we have always wrote together and decided why not join forces and give this industry ago together. So far the journey and feedback has been amazing!
How would you describe your sound? Who would you say are your biggest influencers?
Our sound is Indie Folk, think Lumineers/mumford and sons only with a Male/Female dynamic! Our influences come from the Likes of The Lumineers, The East Pointers, First Aid Kit.
You have a new single titled “Home” coming out, which is exciting news! Why don’t you tell us a bit about it? Can you talk us through the creative process when making the track?
Yes, “Home” is our debut single, we came up with the lyrics first we wanted the song to represent two people in love and just how far you would go for the person you love.
It’s a song we think everyone can hopefully relate to at one point in their lives, when you find that special person.
We believe that you can tell a lot about an artist by the music that they listen to. Can you each tell us who your top 5 most listened to artists are at the moment?
Yes so between both of us we are listening to the following artists right now, Novo Amar, Luke Combs, The Paper kites, Stephen Sanchez and Smith & Thell.
Is there a festival/venue you would love to perform at one day? Why would performing there mean so much to the both of you?
We would absolutely love to perform at Other Voices! We have grew up watching it every year on tv and as irish artists we think it would be such an honour to be selected to perform at it. The audiences and venues seem so magical!
If I told you to write a song based on what you’re feeling right now, what would it be about and what would it be called?
We are in the process of writing a new song called, “Heaven knows” its a song dedicated to our dear Manager John Rogers who sadly passed away very suddenly last month, we miss him terribly and wanted to write a song to him.
What would you say are the biggest challenges you face as an independent artist? How do you overcome this?
I think no matter what in the music industry independent or not you are always faced with challenges its just the way of the business unfortunately. Having the right Contacts are definitely a big help in music and in order to get these you need to put in the effort and network at music industry days and conferences and introduce yourself to people face to face. We have found that has definitely helped us in making connections and getting slots at festivals etc. It means once you send an email people have a face to the name!
From an independent point of view, how do you feel the Internet has changed the music industry?
Massively!!
In good ways and bad, so many of our followers and pre saves for our single has come from tiktok and it really has given us that opportunity to get Paper Tides out there and have such a following without even playing one show. The support and feedback for us has been overwhelming and really rallied us on to releasing our single sooner than we thought!
On the other hand if feel its a very toxic place to for artists where you are constantly trying to post interesting and aesthetically pleasing content and trying to “keep up” with what everyone else is doing. It can also be soul destroying if you post something snd maybe it doesn’t get so many likes etc and if you let it it could really knock your confidence!
Finally, what does the future hold for Paper Tides? Can you tell us of anymore plans?
Yes we have so many exciting plans and things in place for Paper Tides lets just say we have a very busy summer of festivals and gigs. Unfortunately we cant spill the beans yet as we have alot under wraps but you may also catch us on a winter irish tour with an amazing artist! Either way you will definitely know who Paper Tides are before the end of 2023!! Thanks so much for the interview guys. ❤️
“Home” is now available to stream via all major streaming platforms so be sure to check it out! Paper Tides are certainly ones to keep your eye on so follow them on Instagram and TikTok for future updates!
