After being unmasked on The Masked Singer UK, Busted star Charlie Simpson took the opportunity to release a brand new EP titled “Kifaru,” which showcases some of his best covers that he performed on the show.
After weeks of questioning who was behind the Rhino mask, Charlie was finally able to reveal his true identity. Judges Davina McCall, Rita Ora, Mo Gilligan, and Jonathan Ross were enthralled by Rhino’s unique and soothing voice. They guessed many other names in that time, with Jonathan Ross being adament that the voice belonged to X-Factor winner James Arthur. The final came down to two contestants – Rhino and Phoenix. Phoenix took second place and it was revealed to have been Kasier Cheifs frontman, Ricky Wilson! Rhino was the overall winner and was of course, Charlie Simpson.
Once being announced winner, Charlie thought it would be a good idea to release a new EP. Viewers fell head over heels for his voice and wanted more. “Kifaru” consists of four tracks – three of these being studio covers of the songs he performed on the Masked Singer. In the final, he sung a stunning performance of Lewis Capaldi’s iconic track “Before You Go,” which is featured on the EP. His beautifully low tones suit the song flawlessly. Pair that with the simple piano melody and it’s wonderfully captivating. The other covers on the EP include Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” and Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars.” Both of which are also piano ballads that showcases Charlie’s voice beautifully.
The other track on “Kifaru” is actually an orginal that the singer wrote himself. “I See You” is a track that features on Charlie’s solo album “Hope Is A Drug” that was released last year. The version on the EP is an LA mix. The LA mix is slightly more upbeat than the orginal, but the passion and the feel of the track has not been taken away. This allows the listener to listen to both versions depending on what kind of mood they are in.
Charlie Simpson truly deserved that winning title. His voice is one of the best out there, and he has proved that for all of us to see…unless you’re a Busted fan. Then you’ve always know that. “Kifaru” is out now on all major streaming platforms! You can follow Charlie on Twitter and Instagram for future updates.
