Disney+ celebrated their anniversary by releasing a bunch of new content onto the streaming site. One of these new releases includes a wonderful live action remake of everyone’s childhood favourite “Pinocchio.”
The original animation was released all the way in 1940. Based off of the classic book written by Carlo Collodi back in 1883, the story of a puppet who learns about the rights and wrongs of the world was brought to life right before our eyes. Since the animation was released, “Pinocchio” has been one of the most loved Disney characters to date – with children from all over the world today still learning lessons from this fantastic tale.
Of course, we all know about the puppet whose nose grows when he lies, and his adventurous quest into becoming a real boy. Now, Disney has made the tale even more magical by releasing a modernised, live-action version. The film stars the brilliant Tom Hanks who plays Geppetto. As we all know, when the legendary Tom Hanks is part of the cast, you just KNOW it’s going to be good before even watching it. The opening scene sees Geppetto in his cosy, yet lonely house, hunched over a new woodworking project. A stunning puppet that is dedicated to his lost son. After seeing a shining star in the sky, he wishes for the puppet to become a real boy. The Blue Fairy (Cynthia Erivo) comes later that evening and makes his wish come true…sort of.
Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) comes to life, but is still made out of wood. The Blue Fairy tells the puppet that in order to be a real boy, he must learn about the world morally. She orders Jiminy Cricket (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to be his conscience and to guide him on his journey – a task easier said than done.
The film was simply beautiful, and quite frightening at times! Disney have somehow made it 100x more magical than the original. A couple of new characters were also introduced including Sofia (Lorraine Bracco) who is a sassy seagull that helps Pinocchio and Jiminy through some challenges. Overall, it was a suspenseful and thrilling film fun for all the family.
It is now available to watch over on Disney+ now!
