INTERVIEW – Greywind Chat About New Single ‘Am I Asleep?

Today (19th of February), sees the brand-new release from Irish rock duo Greywind! Their new single “Am I Asleep?” is now available to stream on Spotify.

Greywind consists of siblings Steph (vocals) and Paul O’Sullivan (guitar). “Am I Sleep?” is an enchanting track that was produced by Romesh Dodangoda – who has worked with the iconic rick band Bring Me The Horizon. The track starts of smooth and slow before Steph’s vocals gradually build, eventually turning the song into an absolute belter.

Alongside the release, Greywind also dropped a highly creative music video that bought the track to life. The video is now available to watch via YouTube below;

We wanted to know a bit more about this power duo so got in touch. Here is an introduction to your new favourite music pair:

Hey guys! Thanks for answering our questions! We hope you’re doing well.

We’re doing really great, thank you for having us!

You’re just about to release your brand-new single “Am I Asleep?” Amazing track! Why don’t you start by telling us a bit about it? How did it come together?

During the writing process for ‘Am I Asleep?’ we were heavily inspired by movies. We’ve always aimed to bring a cinematic sound to our music and visuals and we wanted to expand on that more than ever with this song. We recorded the song with Romesh Dodangoda who has worked on some massive Grammy nominated albums and we had such an incredible experience working with him. We’re so excited for our fans to hear it!

The music video that goes with it is rather interesting. What is the story behind that?

For the ‘Am I Asleep?’ music video we wanted to create a dreamlike world that our fans can escape into. There are a lot of hidden references in the song and music video so we’re looking forward to seeing if any of our fans can find them!

For those who may not have heard your music before, how would you describe your sound? Who would you say are your biggest influences?

We would describe our music as atmospheric, emotional and powerful. We love beautiful calm moments that can suddenly erupt into massive emotional parts when you least expect it. Some of our favourite artists are the likes of My Chemical Romance, The Killers, Jimmy Eat World, Sigur Ros.

Where do you find the inspiration when writing music? Do you ever get writers block? If so, how do you overcome it?

We always like to take our time with each song and let them come alive naturally. Taking a step back from a song and not forcing it is the best way to work. Inspiration wise, we live in a beautiful town in Ireland called Killarney so we’re surrounded by forests and lakes here so that has definitely impacted and inspired our sound as we’re a very visual band in the sense that we love bringing that imagery into our lyrics, artwork and music videos.

You’ve already received a fair amount of success. Where do you want to go from here? What is your biggest goal you want to achieve?

We’ve always set our goals high and we’ve been lucky enough to have been able to make a lot of our dreams come true already and becoming an arena band is definitely one of our aims that we want to achieve in the next few years.

What is the best advice you would give to someone who might be thinking about starting a career in music?

It’s an obvious one but focus completely on writing the best songs you possibly can. A lot of people think to get noticed that they need to rush and start playing live shows straight away but if your songs aren’t good enough yet then none of that matters.

Could you tell us where your dream venue to perform would be? Why does this venue stand out to you so much?

We’ve always seen images and footage of massive artists playing at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in America. It’s one of the most beautiful venues we’ve ever seen and the incredible setting would suit our music so much. It’s on our bucket list of venues we aim to headline in the next few years.

Who would you like to work with in the future? This could be a dream collaboration with another artist, or a producer that you admire.

I think our dream collaboration would be with My Chemical Romance or The Killers. They were two of the bands that made us want to start Greywind in the first place so it would be so special to work with them or tour with them in the future!

What is one question you wish someone would ask you in an interview, but nobody ever does?

I wish someone would ask us what actor we would like to guest star in a future music video! Our answer is Leonardo DiCaprio.

Finally, can you tell us of any plans you may have for the rest of the year?

We don’t want to give everything away just yet but we have a lot of exciting things coming up in 2021! New music, shows and lots of other exciting things we’re so excited to announce in the next few months.
