REVIEW – Nightly Release New EP ‘night, love you. (alt EP)

On the 29th of January 2021, Nashville based band Nightly dropped their remarkable, four-track EP titled “night, love you. (alt EP).” This collection of songs are now available to stream on all major streaming platforms!

“night, love you. (alt EP)” follows the release of the bands debut album “night, love you” which was dropped in October last year. The EP sees four re-workings of songs that were featured on that album.

Upon hearing the EP, we’re greeted with a stunning, stripped back version of “not like you.” Simplicity in songs have a way of enticing the listener and make them appreciate every lyric that is sung. Whilst the original version of the track is fun and upbeat, when you strip it back, it creates a whole new listening experience. You can listen to them both back-to-back and it will be like listening to two, completely different songs.

When then move onto to an alternative version of “so sly.” This one hits you deep down in the chest. It has a heart-breaking element that will want to make you cry. But who doesn’t love a song that can make us feel emotion? Even the emotions we don’t want to feel? Sad songs are everyone’s guilty pleasure and this can be your new favourite. The beat of the bass adds to the track, making the relatable lyrics hit you just that bit more.

“summer” comes next and it shows the band reminiscing to a time they fell in love. The original version has a mixture of synths and electric guitar melodies. The EP has treated us to a beautiful acoustic version, making you miss that one special person. The nostalgia really slaps you round the face and will take you back to a time when we were actually allowed to go outside!

Finally, the EP concludes with a live acoustic performance of “older”. There is something about live versions to songs that make it extra vulnerable. The vocals are more raw, and the lyrics more defined. You can also hear each band members individual contribution, and witness the pure talent that they have.

Nightly take inspiration from some of the biggest bands in the industry including Coldplay and The Killers to Tears for Fears and Miguel. These influences shine through on their album, but still making the songs their own. When speaking about the album, frontman Jonathan Capeci says;

“From the beginning we’ve wanted to be an album band. ‘night, love you.’ was the sentiment behind the band name, so in a way this is our semi-self titled debut. It’s deeply personal, and we couldn’t be more proud of this record. All of it was created in Joey’s basement which feels full circle from where we started, making songs in a tiny apartment. All of the songs were written this year with the exception of the closing track which is one of the first songs we ever wrote. We always knew that we wanted to save it for our debut record, now it’s finally yours.”

With over 100 million streams across music platforms, the Nashville trio are bound to keep on thriving. The full-length album can be streamed here, and be sure to follow Nightly on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates on future releases.
