Back in December, the weird and wonderful YUNGBLUD released his sensational, number 1 album “weird!” – highly recommend you go check it out on Spotify if you haven’t already!
Okay, so “weird!” was released over a month ago so chances are you’ve heard it already. The reason why this review is coming to you now is because we feel that it’s the perfect album to get you through the lockdown. It’s fun, inspirational, and gives the young generation hope for the future. Upbeat and positive vibes all round, and now is the time to listen to music like this.
The entire album is rollercoaster ride. But this article would be an eight hour read if we went through it track by track (that’s how long it would take to do it justice). For this reason, we have (somehow) narrowed it down to the five that will get through a bad day.
5) charity
“charity” is a song that you’ll have no problem jumping around your bedroom to. The best times to listen to this is when you first wake up in the morning, or if you’re on a jog or doing a home workout. It has an energy that travels from your ears to the rest of your body, giving you a buzz that will give you the motivation to run a marathon. The only way to listen to it is on full blast…okay so that goes for all of his songs. Who can listen to YUNGBLUD quietly? No-one, is the answer to that question. But, if you’re listening to it on your speakers, be sure to call into your neighbours…to tell them that they should listen to it to because the album is banging.
4) the freak show
“the freak show” is the last track on the album and the rockstar sure wanted to end it with a bang! It’s a bit of a weird one (pun absolutely intended) but in the best way possible. It’s almost like listening to five different songs at once. You can hear so many influences and YUNGBLUD has managed to combine all of them into one, incredibly crafted song.
3) mars
“mars” has to be one of the most stunning songs off the album – if not the most stunning song from artist ever. It tells a beautiful tale of a young, transgender woman and about being accepted. No amount of words can describe the story behind the track – YUNGBLUD does it just too perfectly. Something that has always been admirable about him is how he promotes self-acceptance, and how you should always express yourself. You can be who you want to be, no matter what people say. “mars” is sung with such passion, and the lyrics are so powerful, it’s enough to give you goosebumps. It’s just a hard song to forget. But that’s okay because you don’t want to forget this story. The track was also released alongside a magnifcient music video that is equally powerful. Simply amazing.
2) cotton candy
Moving on to something a bit more light-hearted and upbeat we have “cotton candy.” A track that’s all about expressing your sexuality and connecting with people. The song begins with a snappy bass-line that you’ll hear throughout the track – it’s what keeps the song so ridiculously catchy. “cotton candy” will get stuck in your head so much, you’re probably going to end up losing sleep over it. But who needs to rest really? It’s also highly addictive. You’re probably going to have it on repeat for the next five years.
1) weird!
The top spot was a hard one to fill. “weird!” managed to snap the top title as it’s the one that perfectly describes the situation we’re currently all facing and puts a positive spin on it. The track was released as a single during the very first lockdown we were facing, and the music video that was dropped alongside it was created whilst YUNGBLUD was stuck in an Air B&B in LA. Despite the circumstance, it’s enough to put a smile on your face. Once again, like all of the songs on the album, “weird!” is so catchy you’ll wonder how someone can be so talented. The whole album is such genius, you can’t help but be envious of it.
If this series was called “Our Top 13” then this album would be perfect because it means we can rave about every single track all we like. But, unfortunately it’s not, and these just happen to be the ones we believe will get through a bad day the most. Music like this is something we all need right now so we suggest you go give it a listen.
YUNGBLUD hasn’t stayed a stranger. He’s currently posting regular episodes on “The YUNGBLUD Podcast” where he chats to some pretty extraordinary and inspiring people. Definitely worth having a listen to. You can find the most recent, and past episodes here.
