Movies have a way of filling our hearts with pure joy. There is nothing better than spending a quiet evening indoors with a comfort film of our choosing.
Whilst the stories behind these films can be moving in itself, what can really add to the emotion are the soundtracks that play alongside them. There are many movie soundtracks that are prominent within pop culture, and are simply timeless. We can’t share them all, but we can certainly share some of our favourites.
This list is in no particular order, and we have not included any tracks that are featured in musicals.
5. Johnny B Goode – Back to the Future
The song that inspired this list was “Johnny B. Goode” that was included in the first Back to the Future film. The track was originally sung by Chuck Berry back in 1958. Fast forward to 1985 when Back to the Future aired for the first time, and we are greeted by the iconic scene where Marty McFly (Micheal J Fox) performs the song at his parents High School dance. The song “Earth Angel” was performed in the movie just before Marty McFly took to the stage and also deserves an honourable mention.
4. Don’t You (Forget About Me)
Don’t You (Forget About Me) was featured in the renowned movie The Breakfast Club; sung by Scottish band, Simple Minds. When the band were appraoched with the track, they originally declined recording the song. They have been quoted to say that they did not find the track “memorable”. The song was then offered to Billy Idol who also turned it down. Later, Simple Minds were convinced after they were able to put their own signature sound onto the demo. It later become Number 1 on the Billboard chart and gave us that notable scene that showed at the end of The Breakfast Club.
3. Send Me on My Way – Matilda
“Send Me on my Way” by Rusted Root has actually been in the sountrack of more than one movie which is why it has earnt it’s place on this list. The most famous scene however, was the pancake/reading montage that featured in 1996 film, Matilda. Later, it was also heard in the first Ice Age film that was released in 2002. “Send Me on my Way” is also our Song of the Week!
2. On My Way – Brother Bear
Phil Collins has been known to write some incredible soundtracks. He was the main writer for Disney’s classic movie Tarzan, and he also did Brother Bear. “On My Way” played whilst our lovable characters made a long journey through the vast unknown. The track is filled with hope and will stay in your hearts forever.
1. My Heart Will Go On – Titanic
Of course, this list will not be complete if we did not include Celine Dion’s magnificent My Heart Will Go On. Obviously, the song was the leading track for Titanic back in 1997. A love song that is simply unforgettable. Although, Celine once thought otherwise. Similar to Simple Minds, the singer oringinally was not interested in recording the track. She recorded the song in one take just to “try it”. Later, this same recording was used as the sountrack we all know and love to this day.
Movie soundtracks add a little extra magic to all our beloved movies. There are so many out there that belong on this list, but honestly, we would be here forever.
